Family-Owned Paving Stone Excellence
At Western Interlock, paving stones aren’t just products; they’re a reflection of our family values, craftsmanship, and commitment to helping you transform your outdoor space into something extraordinary.
We’ve been family-owned and operated in the Pacific Northwest since 1990. Over the past 30+ years, we’ve helped thousands of homeowners and contractors bring their hardscape visions to life one paving stone at a time. Our reputation is built on trust, quality, and a genuine passion for doing things right.
Our products are built with the Pacific Northwest in mind. That means they’re made to handle rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and everyday wear, while looking beautiful year after year. Whether you’re building a patio in Portland or a walkway in Walla Walla, our pavers are engineered for your climate, your style, and your life.
Western Interlock Paving Stones: Answers To Your Questions
Our paving stones are made from high-strength, dry-cast concrete that includes natural aggregates, Portland cement, and mineral pigments for color. Each batch is precision-mixed and formed using vibration and compression to achieve maximum density and durability.
This process results in dense, low-absorption stones that are built to resist cracking, staining, and surface wear even in the harshest weather conditions. It’s the same technology used in European streets that has lasted for centuries.
Concrete paving stones are manufactured products, while natural stone is quarried directly from the earth. Here’s how they compare:
- Consistency: Concrete pavers offer uniform size, shape, and thickness, making installation faster and more precise. Natural stone can vary significantly.
- Color Options: Pavers are available in a wide range of color blends and finishes. Natural stone is limited to what’s found in nature.
- Cost: Concrete pavers are generally more affordable and easier to replace. Natural stone tends to be more expensive and harder to match.
- Strength: Our concrete pavers are designed to exceed 8,000 psi, which is often stronger than many types of natural stone.
Both options can be beautiful—but for DIYers and most homeowners, paving stones offer better value, faster installation, and a wider design palette.
Yes, for most outdoor applications, paving stones offer superior performance compared to poured concrete. Here’s why:
- Crack Resistance: Unlike a single concrete slab, paving stones have joints that allow for natural expansion and contraction, reducing the chance of cracking.
- Repairability: If a paver becomes damaged, you can easily replace it without tearing up the whole surface.
- Style & Flexibility: With dozens of shapes, sizes, and colors available, pavers give you more design freedom.
- Durability: Our paving stones are rated higher than standard concrete in compressive strength and weather resistance.
The bottom line? Pavers are a smarter, more beautiful solution for patios, walkways, driveways, and outdoor living areas.
Our paving stones are built to last a lifetime, and we back that up with a Lifetime Product Warranty on residential installations.
Because of their dense, low-absorption structure, Western Interlock pavers are incredibly durable. With proper base preparation and installation, they’ll hold up for decades with little to no maintenance. Many of our customers report that their patios and walkways still look great after 20 years or more.
And if one stone ever does need to be replaced? You can simply lift it out and drop a new one in. No jackhammer required.
Yes a properly prepared base is essential for the longevity and performance of your paving stone surface.
At Western Interlock, we recommend the following base structure for most applications:
- Excavate to the required depth based on your project.
- Install a compacted gravel base (usually 4–6 inches of ¾” minus gravel).
- Apply a 1-inch bedding layer of concrete sand.
- Lay your pavers and compact them in place.
- Sweep in joint sand and apply edge restraints.
Skipping the base layer can lead to settling, uneven surfaces, and premature failure. But with the right prep—and the right guidance—you’ll enjoy a surface that stays beautiful and functional for years to come. (Check out our DIY with WI tutorials for step-by-step help.)
It depends on your experience level, project size, and comfort with hands-on work. That said, many of our customers choose to go the DIY route—and with the right tools and guidance, you can too.
