Have you been looking for a paving stone that would give your patio or courtyard a more modern look? We recently launched a new paver family called La Pietra™ Moderna. It is a version of the popular La Pietra™ family of slabs, but with a new smooth and much more modern finish.

This article will give you all the details of the La Pietra™ Moderna paving stone, including its history, features, benefits, and why it could be the ideal stone for your new hardscape.

The backstory

We released the La Pietra™ family of slabs in 2015. The collection has been popular ever since then for its textured surface and large size.

While the La Pietra™ family’s look and texture is reminiscent of Pennsylvania bluestone, La Pietra™ Moderna has a completely smooth contemporary finish.

Translated into English, the name means “the modern stone carver,” and it truly is a contemporary and distinguished stone. La Pietra™ Moderna pairs well with some of our other smooth stones, such as the Holland Stone, the Leiden collection, or Park and Plaza Stones. Like these smoother stones, La Pietra™ Moderna has a beveled edge, which we made ever so slightly wider to balance the paver’s larger size.

What makes it unique?

Several factors make the La Pietra™ Moderna a unique stone: its flat top, beveled edges, and dramatic color blends.

Flat top

The stone has a flat top—rather than a textured one—making it much smoother and more comfortable for your or your children’s bare feet. The flat top also gives it the sleek and modern look that is so eye-catching.

Beveled edge

Another distinguishing factor of this paver is that the edges are beveled (slightly angled). Many other pavers have edges that are straight, cobbled, or somewhat jagged.

Dramatic color blend

In addition to a traditional grayscale Cambridge blend and a gray and brown Jamestown blend, the La Pietra™ Moderna is also available in a reddish Umbria blend (named for a beautiful region in Italy). The larger sizes of these slabs provides a wonderful canvas to display the dramatic color blending, much like travertine marble. Each blend gives your project a different look and feel, so make sure you know what you want the finished style of your space to be.

One of the most popular projects our customers use La Pietra™ Moderna for is patios, either square or rectangular. The finished product is a smooth, inviting, and versatile space that can be easily used in many different ways.

In the DIY with WI tutorial, How to Make a Square Patio, we built a La Pietra™ Moderna patio from the ground up for a local Oregon family. As you can see, we built it as a garden enhancement to spiff up their shed area.

Due to its larger size, La Pietra Moderna is not a stone that should be used in a driveway. It is ideal for pool decks, courtyards, or walkways.
