Are you a contractor in charge of a landscaping project with tight spaces? Are you wanting to get the most out of a property that you can? Meet MagnumStone: one of the best, modern options for building gravity walls.

In this blog post, we are doing an overview of MagnumStone—what it is best used for, its advantages, and how you, as a contractor, can best implement it into hardscape projects.

What is a gravity wall?

First, what is a gravity wall? If you’re interested in MagnumStone, you’re likely familiar with the term—but if not, a gravity wall is a type of retaining wall that relies on its own weight for strength. Standard retaining walls usually have additional reinforcements from geogrids, which requires significant excavation before they can be installed. Gravity walls, on the other hand, can be installed in areas that do not allow room for much excavation, or simply in areas you do not want to disturb any more than necessary.

Gravity walls are ideal for areas with extreme site limitations, or for edges of properties that you want to get as much use out of as possible. They are typically built with heavy stones or blocks that can be quite difficult to install.

What is MagnumStone?

MagnumStone is not your average retaining wall block. While still quite heavy (when they’re filled with gravel, the standard stones weigh over 2,000 lbs), they are much more lightweight and easily installed than the typical blocks used to build gravity walls. MagnumStone is precast with a hollow core, using at least 30-40% less concrete in each cubic foot as a standard retaining wall block.

What are the advantages of MagnumStone?

MagnumStone makes gravity walls more accessible and easily installed. Eliminating the excavation time and labor that a standard retaining wall requires significantly reduces the time needed for installing MagnumStone. The lighter weight of MagnumStone makes for more nimble applications, with only a basic excavator or telehandler required to install them. MagnumStone usually only requires a couple of guys to work for a day on installation, instead of the much longer backbreaking labor of multiple men that standard gravity wall block would demand.

The comparably lightweight nature of MagnumStone enables twice as much block to be transported on a truck as heavier blocks. This has two benefits: it helps your bottom line by saving on costly shipping, and it is more environmentally friendly. MagnumStone also has sixteen different face molds with several finish options that naturally fit into almost any landscape design.

How can you use MagnumStone?

Whether you are in charge of a project on a property that is small and a little tight; or are simply wanting to maximize a larger space, you very likely want to install a gravity wall. MagnumStone is the ideal option for gravity walls, including planters. Not only is it nearly ½  of the weight of a typical large retaining wall block, it also makes for much more quickly completed projects since they require so much less excavation, and each standard MagnumStone block covers eight square feet.

MagnumStone blocks also has two lengths of gravity wall extenders that can attach to the back of the block to meet certain engineering requirements.

Is MagnumStone for you?

If you are looking for a gravity wall block that is more eco-friendly, accessible, easily installed, and will blend well with many different forms of landscaping, MagnumStone is the ideal choice.
