Yes a properly prepared base is essential for the longevity and performance of your paving stone surface.
At Western Interlock, we recommend the following base structure for most applications:
- Excavate to the required depth based on your project.
- Install a compacted gravel base (usually 4–6 inches of ¾” minus gravel).
- Apply a 1-inch bedding layer of concrete sand.
- Lay your pavers and compact them in place.
- Sweep in joint sand and apply edge restraints.
Skipping the base layer can lead to settling, uneven surfaces, and premature failure. But with the right prep—and the right guidance—you’ll enjoy a surface that stays beautiful and functional for years to come. (Check out our DIY with WI tutorials for step-by-step help.)
