Do I need a base layer under my paving stones?

Last updated on February 19th, 2026

Yes a properly prepared base is essential for the longevity and performance of your paving stone surface.

At Western Interlock, we recommend the following base structure for most applications:

  1. Excavate to the required depth based on your project.
  2. Install a compacted gravel base (usually 4–6 inches of ¾” minus gravel).
  3. Apply a 1-inch bedding layer of concrete sand.
  4. Lay your pavers and compact them in place.
  5. Sweep in joint sand and apply edge restraints.

Skipping the base layer can lead to settling, uneven surfaces, and premature failure. But with the right prep—and the right guidance—you’ll enjoy a surface that stays beautiful and functional for years to come. (Check out our DIY with WI tutorials for step-by-step help.)
